Requirements to become a volunteer
You must be of legal age. If you are 16 years old, your parents or legal guardians will be required to sign a permit.
To walk dogs which are of potentially dangerous breeds you have to be of legal age and also possess a license which allows to drive these dogs for volunteers from Mataró, Badalona or Cabrils, depending on the centre from which the activity is being carried out.

The Animal Protection society of Mataró has a Volunteer Program, it’s main aim is to establish a space of commitment from which the volunteers, want to part of it, can learn about the work, values and the objectives of the protector society, helping us to go further in the protection, well-being and future of the animals in our shelters.
13 different activities, some from the shelters, others from the volunteers’ homes and also from the street. All of them with one single objective: to look after the animals, for their well-being and for their dignity.
Dog walk
Join the volunteer walkers group of the SPAM!
Thanks to the volunteers, the dogs in the shelters can spend time outside the centers and enjoy company.
This activity contributes to maintaining their emotional balance, helps their socialization and reduces their stress. A balanced and socialized dog is always more likely to be adopted.
What profile of volunteer walkers do we need?
We can’t always make sure we’ll have very quiet, small dogs, or puppies, to walk around. Small dogs and puppies are usually adopted quickly, so what we really need are volunteers who can walk large dogs.
In addition, many of our dogs are of the so-called potentially dangerous breeds: they are very good dogs but that in order to be walked, they need volunteers who want to take out the volunteer license to be able to walk them. Pressing HERE you can see a little more information about these licenses.

Cats accompaniment
Come to keep the cats in our shelter company!
In our shelters, an average of 50 cats live together. Some of them are very sociable, whereas others are not, either because they are afraid of their past situations or because sharing a space with so many cats provokes a lot of stress for them. The goal of this activity is to help them keep their emotional balance and reduce their stress through physical touch, games, interaction, participation in environmental enrichment and company.
Street cats
Without feeders, street cats in Mataró would be abandoned to their fate.
SpAm organizes a total of 82 street cat colonies in Mataró. In addition to taking care of the capture, sterilization and return of cats to their colonies (CSR), it also takes care of these cats’ veterinary attention and supports the feeders in the space upkeep.
Without feeders, all these cats that belong to our environment and deserve to be respected would be abandoned to their fate.

Therapeutic babysitting and fostering
Thanks to foster homes, many animals are saved and recover their will to live
This activity takes place from the volunteer’s home. The goal is to give adequate attention to abandoned animals that, due to being cubs, having been medically intervened, suffering any disease or being unable to adapt to foster centres, need continuous attention or spaces that are impossible to offer by the shelters.
The satisfaction of seeing a cat or a dog recovering and willing to live and socialize is an extraordinary experience! Fill in the form and join the group of foster volunteers of the spAm!
Events, rescues and other activities
From the spAm, we also need the help of the volunteers in other activities that contribute to improving the abandoned animals’ life. Get information about these activities by writing to info@protectoramataro.org
Fairs, social networks and events. Participation in social networks, fairs, events, parades and collection actions helps to make public the reality of abandonment beyond the shelter doors.
Baths and enrichment. From the shelter group, we organise bath and hygiene activities regarding the animals of the centre, as well as enriching activities for the spaces to make life friendlier for them.
Search for lost animals. It is not frequent, but if accidentally an animal escapes or gets lost from the centres or the adoption or foster homes, we want to be ready to find them as soon as possible.
Presence in schools. There are schools and educational centres that often want to get to know the work we do from the shelter. Your support can help us to achieve the goal of a worthier future for the animals.
Professional volunteering
Your profession can also help abandoned animals.
From your job, either punctual or temporary voluntary activities can be of great help to improve animals’ life in shelters.
Some of the professional areas that can help us are: veterinary, canine and feline education, ethology, education, communication, IT, graphic design, gardening, carpentry, construction (…)
